Not only does he not look nice, but there is a distinct air about the mutant that exudes a clear message that he simply does not want to be bothered. The brave one that does engage Logan should expect large amounts of mistrust, disrespect and sarcasm. He is not an open book. He does not do small talk. Any conversation with him is generally limited to one, or two words and when he does talk it is gruff, rude, blunt and overall pessimistic. One should also never expect him to smile. In fact, it could be said that Logan seems to have the world's most perpetual resting bitch face. In one word, Logan is probably best described as being an 'asshole', but there are some good reasons why. First and foremost, Logan is a soldier, existing through some of the most prominent historical time periods up to, and including, participation in the American Civil War, both World Wars and Vietnam War. It goes without saying that for a person serving in any war, it can leave lingering effects. Imagine the impact it could leave if someone served in all of them. Not only did Logan have blood on his hands, but serving also gave him a firsthand glimpse at the merciless behavior capable by both humans and mutants alike. But there are other reasons Logan presents himself the way he does, mostly in that he has been around a very long time and lost almost everyone he has ever come to care about. That, or they have betrayed him, which does not help with the constant need to escape into solitary life and avoid the general population, if he can. Those are scars that run deeper than anything left behind from any war he has been in. Those are the ones that have consistently remained in his mind and stayed to remind him that he is better off alone; to live with the “curse” of his mutation, as he typically thinks of it. Does that mean Logan is fully incapable of trusting someone? Or, even showing loyalty? No. It just takes the right kind of person who is willing to be patient and understanding with him. Logan is not beyond loyalty and though the group is small, he is capable of actually showing it. Although, he will in his own way. The one that tops that list is Charles Xavier, to whom Logan feels the strongest connection with where it comes to knowing that with great power comes great loneliness. Charles is also the one who made sure Logan was aware from the start that he was not as alone as he believed himself to be and offered the reluctant mutant a “home”. He also gave him a chance to be a part of a group that uses their abilities for the good. But even if it is on his own terms, the mutant still distances himself from it. Theirs is an association that in later years, though not openly recognized by either, became something more akin to a father and son relationship. With the exception of being at his absolute worse, Logan does have a moral side and will not attack unless provoked, threatened, in pain, or under tremendous stress. Those that have the courage to push him to the point where his claws come out are taken out with zero remorse. It is while in these blind, beserker rages when you see a very primal, more feral side of Logan. This is where his moniker of ‘Wolverine’ seems most fitting. And while some do not see him as an animal, he does, and trying to convince him otherwise is literally impossible. Sadly, Logan will not change. He lives each day like a soldier returning from battle. He simply has no faith that the world will change for the better and as time passes on, his opinion turns more bleak. To him, there will always be the darker part of people that shows more than the good. There will always be a war to fight, or a threat at his back door. But if a day comes when there is not, then there will always be an adamantium bullet hidden deep down in one of his pockets.
